Yangtze Three Gorges Kayak Expedition

SEATTLE, WA, 31 March 2003—Thomas O’Keefe and Devin Smith recently completed a kayak journey down China’s Yangtze River through the world-famous Three Gorges. The expedition began from the City of Wanxian in the Sichuan Region and ended 9 days and 280 km downstream in Maoping, Hubei Province, which is the site of the Three Gorges Dam. The dam will be the world's largest hydroelectric project and create a reservoir that will bury 630 km of free-flowing river. With construction of the Three Gorges Dam on schedule and plans to begin filling the reservoir later this spring, we believe this was the final journey along one of the world’s great rivers by human-powered craft.
